The 'Over 40 Fashion Rules' Salina Williams Always Breaks

We’re thrilled to announce the latest star of our influencer edit series, Salina Williams, a style-focused digital creator—who just so happens to be over 50. They say age is nothing but a number, and Williams proves this on her social media channels (Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube) on the daily. She doesn’t just have great style for a certain age bracket, she has great style period. And it’s the fact that she doesn’t shy away from certain trends or hemline lengths or any other fashion rules that are put in place for women over the age of 40 made us sure she was someone with whom we wanted to partner.

So, in celebration of her edit in The Shoppe—a collection of items for your wardrobe, your skincare routine, and even your home that have been carefully selected by Williams herself—we thought we’d ask the chic influencer to expand on some of those aforementioned rules and how she loves to break them. Whether you’re in your 20s, your 50s, or an entirely different generation, we think her advice will inspire your next shopping trip and encourage you to express yourself without limitations.

Show Less Skin

“I don’t believe that age should define you or your hem length! All bodies are beautiful and I’m extremely proud of mine! I love challenging that notion that women a certain age need to be covered up, or be selective with how much they show. It’s all about balance in the outfit for me, so start by focusing on a part of yourself you love (and if you don’t have one, time to start those affirmations!), and build from there. For example, I love one-shoulder and off-the-shoulder tops. It’s so subtly sexy. Even just an oversized v-neck sweater or button-down shirt worn asymmetrically to expose a shoulder is such an effortlessly chic look for every age. Wear what you want and pray for forgiveness later!”

Don't Try Out the Trends

“I do believe that when building a functional wardrobe, it’s important to invest in classics, like a great pair of jeans or a well-tailored blazer. But mixing in trendy pieces shouldn’t be exclusive to people in their 20s! So much of fashion is experimenting and having fun! Adding in trend pieces from season to season can add more personality to those investment-worthy basics. That said, don’t feel forced to try something just because it’s trendy. Follow your instincts and try what really appeals to you. Accessories are a great place to start. Right now I’m loving mini bags and belt bags worn across the body as well as layered jewelry on my wrists and neck!”

Find a Signature Style and Stick to It

“There’s nothing wrong with creating a style that’s signature for you, and if you want to stick to your tried-and-true, go for it! But for me, as I’ve gotten older, I realize that you can reinvent yourself as many times as you want! You can start with something as simple as taking risks with your color choices. Just staying open and allowing yourself to be surprised by what makes you look and feel great.”
